Honoured the fallen and veterans on 8th May
First Vice President of the Storting Svein Harberg and Chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, Ine Eriksen Søreide, honoured the fallen and veterans on 8th May.
“On this special day, we have repeated the message year after year that we as a society must always be prepared to stand up and fight. For peace, for freedom and for democracy,” said Svein Harberg in his speech when he laid a wreath at the site where 42 Norwegians were executed during the winter of 1945.
He added that marking Liberation and Veterans Day highlights the values of liberty and security which underpin our society.
First speech of commemoration
Ine Eriksen Søreide sent a message of congratulation to all the veterans and their relatives when she was the first to speak and lay a wreath on Liberation and Veterans Day.
“The images from Ukraine are immensely powerful for us all. But for many of you veterans and relatives they must be especially so,” said Ms Søreide.
She also paid special tribute to the close families and friends of those who have served for Norway abroad.
“You also deserve to be honoured today. It wouldn’t be possible without you,” said Ine Eriksen Søreide.
