The former CEO of Nokia, Jorma Ollila, has been preparing a report on Nordic energy cooperation. Ollila will present the report as a basis for political debate. Other topics on the agenda include the Nordic welfare model and asylum policy.

Leading Norway’s delegation

Michael Tetzschner (Conservative Party) leads the Norwegian delegation, which consists of 20 members of the Storting, Norway’s parliament. The delegation members are newly selected for the Storting’s 2017–2021 period.

The Nordic Council session also provides an occasion for Nordic parliamentary presidents to meet. The Second Vice President of the Storting, Morten Wold (Progress Party), is representing the Storting’s Presidium in his first such official duty outside the Storting since being elected Second Vice President in early October.

Norway assumes presidency

The 69th Session – from 31 October to 2 November in Helsinki – is taking place in Finland’s Parliament House, newly renovated for Finland’s 100th-anniversary celebration as an independent state.

The last day of the session will see the election of the President and Vice President of the Nordic Council for 2018. Norway is in line to hold the council presidency, which rotates among member states. The Norwegian delegation has recommended its head of delegation, Michael Tetzschner, as candidate for President and its deputy head, Martin Kolberg, as candidate for Vice President. The programme for Norway’s presidency of the Nordic Council in 2018 will also be presented.

Award ceremony

The Nordic Council’s prestigious annual cultural and environmental prizes are to be awarded on Wednesday. There are five prizes in all – for children’s and young people’s literature, literature, film, music and the environment. Each prize consists of DKK 350,000 and a statue. The nominees will be present during the award ceremony at Finlandia Hall.
