Ukraine and Belarus in focus at OSCE PA meeting in Vienna
Human rights as a basis for security will be in focus at the 25th Winter Meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) in Vienna on 19th-20th February.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Mr Ruslan Stefanchuk, will be one of those speaking at the opening of the meeting.
Ukraine top of the agenda
“One of the most important messages we will be taking to Vienna is that a united Storting stands behind Ukraine in their fight to defend themselves against Russia’s war of aggression,” said Marius Arion Nilsen (Progress Party).
Mr Nilsen is the head of the Storting’s delegation to the OSCE PA.
“For me as an MP, the principles of the Helsinki Final Act – freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law – lay the foundations for genuine security,” he continued.
Meeting with members of Congress
While in Vienna, the Norwegian delegation, along with its Nordic and Baltic colleagues, will host a special meeting with the organization’s US delegation members.
“It will be very important for us to hear the views of our American colleagues since they haven’t attended meetings of the OSCE PA over the past year. We are also going to underline the right of Greenland to determine its own future,” said Maria Aasen-Svensrud (Labour Party).
The Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Mr. Søren Gade, will be addressing the assembly during the Winter Meeting.
Side-event with democratic forces in Belarus
The Norwegian and Swedish delegations will also be meeting Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the democratic forces in Belarus, during their stay in the Austrian capital.
“We are greatly looking forward to hearing what Ms Tsikhanouskaya has to tell us about developments in Belarus. She’s fighting a crucial battle for democracy in her homeland,” said Marius Arion Nilsen.
Six Norwegian MPs taking part
The following six Members of the Norwegian Parliament will be taking part in Vienna: Marius Arion Nilsen (Progress Party), Maria Aasen-Svensrud (Labour Party), Bård Hoksrud (Progress Party), Ruth Mariann Hop (Labour Party), Ove Trellevik (Conservative Party) and Bjørn Arild Gram (Centre Party).
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly serves in an advisory capacity to the intergovernmental cooperation within the OSCE.
