President of the Storting on official visit to the UK

President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani made an official visit to the United Kingdom from 19th to 21st January. He was accompanied by three other Members of Parliament. The visit included meetings with the Speakers of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Providing the backdrop for the visit to the UK was the uncertain times we are currently living in, making close contact between key allies all the more important.

“Relations between the United Kingdom and Norway are exceptionally good. We share the same fundamental democratic values, and enjoy strong historical ties. We live in turbulent times, marked by democratic backsliding, and with the rules-based international order under increasing pressure. This makes the relationship between Britain and Norway, and between our two parliaments, more vital than ever,” said the President of the Storting.

In addition to Mr Gharahkhani, the delegation comprised Morten Wold (Progress Party), the Storting’s First Vice President; Trine Lise Sundnes (Labour Party) from the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee; and Aleksander Stokkebø (Conservative Party) from the Energy and Environment Committee.

Climate, defence and democracy on the agenda

In addition to the meetings in Parliament, the delegation had a number of other important and interesting items on its agenda. Among these were a first-hand presentation of British anti-drone technology; a meeting with the Department for
Energy Security & Net Zero; and a visit to a nursing home to see how Norwegian health technology is being utilized.

The Storting’s President also spent time with representatives from the UK Youth Parliament to discuss democracy and polarization with a new generation of young people.

“We live in an age of rising polarization. It was fascinating to meet these young Brits, and to hear their views on how we can best fortify democratic resilience,” added Mr Gharahkhani.

Meeting the Speakers of the Commons and the Lords

The MPs spent much of Wednesday 21st January in the Houses of Parliament, where they were hosted by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Lord McFall of Alcluith, Lord Speaker in the House of Lords. The delegation also had meetings with the Business and Trade Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Defence Committee.

Among the topics under discussion were the relationship between Norway and the United Kingdom, the current geopolitical situation, and the war in Ukraine.

«Both Britain and Norway have pledged long-term commitments to support Ukraine. The Storting stands united behind Ukraine’s fight for its freedom against Russia. We hugely appreciate the UK’s leadership and coordinating role in the support for Ukraine,” said Mr Gharahkhani.
