Is the Nordic Region prepared for crisis?

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre will be the keynote speaker when parliamentarians from across the Nordic Region meet in the Storting for the Nordic Council’s annual Theme Session on 16th and 17th April.

The session’s primary focus will be on how the Nordic countries can strengthen their collective resilience and crisis preparedness.

“We aim to use this meeting to discuss how the Nordic countries, through smoother collaboration, can strengthen our overall preparedness and resilience,” said Helge André Njåstad (Progress Party), head of the Storting’s delegation to the Nordic Council.

The Norwegian delegation will host the Theme Session in the Storting.

Remove cross-border obstacles to strengthen preparedness

“We know that even in times of peace, there are various cross-border obstacles that impede the free movement of people, labour and goods between our countries. This is why it’s important for us to look at which mechanisms, procedures or agreements must be in place to prevent the unnecessary bottlenecks that can obstruct cooperation in situations of crisis or war,” Mr Njåstad added.

In addition to Prime Minister Støre, Iceland’s Minister for Nordic Co-operation, Logi Már Einarsson, will also be taking part.

The Theme Session will bring together Nordic Council members from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.

The Nordic Council Presidency rotates between the countries in accordance with an agreed set of rules. This year’s Presidency is held by Finland, and the meetings in the Storting will therefore be chaired by Ville Väyrynen, the Council’s President.
