This year’s Nobel Peace Prize winners to visit the Storting on 11th December
Representatives from the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyō, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024, will be hosted by the President of the Storting, Masud Gharahkhani, on the morning of Wednesday 11th December.
“When I travelled to Japan as President of the Storting in 2023, it was especially important for me to go to Hiroshima. The visit, not least my meeting with the contemporary witnesses, made a lasting impression. This is at the heart of Nihon Hidankyō’s work. By telling their personal stories as hibakusha, they have played a vital role in making sure that nuclear weapons have never been used since,” said Mr Gharahkhani.
The delegation visiting the Storting consists of Terumi Tanaka, Shigemitsu Tanaka and Toshiyuki Mimaki. After their meeting with the Storting’s President, they will be received by members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence.
“The Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee is greatly looking forward to meeting members of Nihon Hidankyō; to hearing their own personal stories as survivors after a nuclear bomb, and to learning about their important work on disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons,” said Ine Eriksen Søreide, chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee.
