Lavvo in Eidsvolls plass

On Tuesday 12th November, the Storting considered the recommendation on the report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. A lavvo has been put up outside the Storting to mark the occasion.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was tasked with investigating the Norwegianization policy and injustice which the Sámi, Kvens/Norwegian Finns and Forest Finns were subjected to. Its report, delivered to the Storting in June 2023, has been dealt with by the Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs Committee.

Representatives from the different groups mentioned in the report have been present in the lavvo in Eidsvolls plass. The lavvo is an arena for respectful and equal dialogue, where conversations around the fire, exhibitions, and samples of traditional Kven/Norwegian Finn, Forest Finn and Sámi dishes are a feature.

– Many people have waited a long time for the Storting’s consideration of the Truth and Reconciliation’s report. That said, today does not mark the end of this important work. Our reconciliation efforts must continue, and this is why the Storting’s Presidium has decided to do something it has never previously done: to mark the day by facilitating an arena for dialogue in Eidsvolls plass for the involved groups on the day the Storting deals with the matter, said President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani.

The programme for the day was full and varied, and open to allcomers. Starting with a breakfast conversation round the fire at 8.30, it also included a live stream of the debate in the Storting Chamber, and rounded off with a new fireside conversation about the way ahead.

Among the many present and taking part were representatives from the concerned groups and members of the Standing Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs.
