There have been only three occasions since the end of World War II on which foreign guests have been invited to address MPs and members of the Government in the Storting Chamber. The first of these was in 1948, when Winston Churchill spoke in the Chamber, while the last time such an event happened was when Mr Zelenskiy himself addressed the Storting by video link on 30^th March 2022. On 13^th December, he spoke again, this time in person.

“You said Churchill was here … so we will win,” said President Zelenskiy to extended and heartfelt applause in the Chamber after hearing the words of welcome by the President of the Storting, Masud Gharahkhani.

“Thank you for your big, big support for our people, our country, our men and women, our children. They are very strong because we have such strong friends,” continued Mr Zelenskiy.

During his visit, he also met with President of the Storting Gharahkhani, and the parliamentary leaders.

Democratic countries must stand together

“Being in the Storting Chamber today during the speech was a powerful experience, and it was a huge honour to welcome President Zelenskiy to the Storting. Not only does this go to show what close ties our two countries have, but also that we are united in standing up for our common democratic values. It’s vital that we continue to support Ukraine even though the war is dragging on. We showed this in the Storting Chamber today,” said Gharahkhani.

During his speech, Mr Gharahkhani stressed how important it is for democratic countries to stand together.

“The war you are fighting in Ukraine is not only about the future of your country. It is about the future of democracy in Europe. We must not cease to support in your struggle,” he said.
