Vote of no confidence in PACE president

The Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has resolved that it has no confidence in Pedro Agramunt as President of the Assembly.

The Bureau is the highest body of the Assembly.

Under the leadership of Ingjerd Schou (Conservative Party), the Storting delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) attended the Assembly’s spring session in Strasbourg in week 17. The week was marked by considerable dissatisfaction with the Parliamentary Assembly’s President Pedro Agramunt following his visit to Syria in March and his meetings with President Assad and parliamentarians, including from Russia.

The Russian parliamentarians included representatives on the EU’s sanction list. At the session’s final meeting, the Bureau declared that its members no longer have confidence in Agramunt as the Assembly’s President. See press release (English).

On 24 April, the Bureau decided to launch an independent external investigation into the corruption allegations made against the Assembly. Head of Delegation Ms Schou played a key role in achieving this resolution

The Norwegian delegation was actively involved in the many political matters that were considered during the week, and helped focus attention on the political work at hand. Among other things, delegation member Ingebjørg Godskesen (Progress Party) played a key role in the Assembly’s discussion of developments in Turkey in response to a report prepared in collaboration with Marianne Mikko (Estonia).
