Statue of King Olav V unveiled
President of the Storting Olemic Thommessen, the Royal Family and the Prime Minister were all present when the new statue of King Olav V was unveiled on Sunday 7th June.
Called “Man and Monument”, the 2.8 metre high statue has been designed and made by the sculptor Olav Orud. The monument, which can now be seen outside the City Hall, is a gift from the municipality of Oslo.
“This sculpture is a fine expression of the close bond between King Olav and his people. It shows how he shaped the modern monarchy in Norway,” Thommessen said.
The unveiling ceremony took place exactly 70 years after the Royal Family disembarked at Honnørbrygga wharf near Oslo City Hall. The Royal Family had spent five years in exile during the Second World War.
Olav Orud won the competition to design and construct the memorial to King Olav in 2010.
