The Chair of the Standing Committee on Energy and the Environment, Ola Elvestuen, was also present at the meeting between the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, and President of the Storting Olemic Thommessen. During the meeting, Mr Mahama and Mr Thommessen discussed the issue of democratic development in West Africa. The vital role played by Ghana as a leading democratic light within a broader African context was stressed, not least with regard to the dramatic events that are taking place in neighbouring Burkina Faso.

Economic cooperation

The question of economic development in Ghana, particularly within the petroleum sector was also on the agenda. President Mahama stressed the important role played by Norway within the field of bilateral cooperation. He also underlined how pleased Ghana was with the extensive involvement of Norwegian business in the country. The Parliament of Ghana is on the verge of passing legislation on oil and gas exploration and production that would markedly improve conditions for Norwegian investment in the petroleum sector.

Long-term efforts to combat Ebola

President Mahama stressed how essential the long-term perspective was in building up response capabilities in the region’s health sector. In his view, the international community must convene a donor conference as soon as the current outbreak has been brought under control. The aim should be to increase international efforts in capacity building and upgrade response capabilities in countries at risk.
