The Council of Europe was established in 1949 and has its headquarters and secretariat in Strasbourg. Comprising 47 member states, it is one of the few truly pan-European organizations.
The principal aim of the Council of Europe is to work towards strengthening human rights, parliamentary democracy and the rule of law in its member states.
The International Department is responsible for secretariat duties for the Storting’s Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
