The Storting has received the news of King Harald’s death with great sadness. The President of the Storting’s words of remembrance were given in connection with today’s announcement that King Harald has passed away. 

All for Norway 

“The will of the people was the will of King Harald,” said the President of the Storting. “In a society in which the Constitution and democracy provide the foundations, King Harald was the people’s king and a protector of our fundamental values.” 

He underlined that King Harald was a bold and innovative monarch, and that he followed the motto “We give our all for Norway” in word and deed. 

“King Harald was with us during the difficult times, just as he was on happier occasions in the sports stadiums or on national holidays,” he added. 

King Harald, a fellow human being

The President of the Storting emphasized King Harald’s cheerful nature and his wonderful way with people. He was both a king and a fellow human being. 

“Perhaps King Harald’s greatest quality as a monarch was the genuine warmth and interest he showed in people. He valued each and every one; his warmth and kindness were hugely important to those he met”, the President said. 

Created space for diversity

In his speech, Mr Gharahkhani also made the point that King Harald touched many, both at home and abroad, when he said that Norwegians are a diverse people, and that in Norway there is room to be whatever you want. 

The President of the Storting also expressed his deepest condolences to Sonja, the Queen Mother; King Haakon; and the other members of the Royal Family, who have lost a husband, a father, a father-in-law and a grandfather. He ended his speech by looking ahead. 

“We welcome Norway’s new king, His Majesty King Haakon VIII, who must now carry out his royal duties. We will meet King Haakon with confidence in the conviction that he will carry on the work of his father. For the people and for the fatherland,” said the President.
